The Wright Gallery, an exciting new artistic endeavour, will open at The Quay in Westport on June 3. The gallery, located in Sue Wright’s original craft shop, is being run on an ongoing basis by a collective of ten locally-based artists under the banner of The Wright Artists.
The initiative took shape after Sue posted an advertisement in The Mayo News. Recognising this as an excellent opportunity to showcase their work, a group of artists came together as a collective to run the gallery as an ongoing concern. The Wright Artists collective currently represents the artistic talents of Breda Burns, Mags Duffy, Betty Gannon, Pam Gray, Claire Griffin, Mary O’Grady, Gráinne O’Reilly, Susie Quinn, Sinéad Wall and Ian Wieczorek. The line-up represents a wide range of artistic talents and media, including painting, print, photography and sculpture, and a variety of themes and concerns.
A former potter and long-time supporter of the arts, Sue Wright is enthusiastic about the project and its possibilities. “I am delighted to be able to offer the facilities to support and promote local artistic endeavour,” she stated. “Hopefully this is the beginning of an ongoing venture that will develop and grow.”
“This represents a great opening for all the artists involved,” confirmed Mags Duffy, one of the artists involved in the collective, “not only to exhibit our work but also as a potential business opportunity.” The Wright Artists see themselves as a long-term project, and are keen to keep the work fresh on the walls, with an ongoing programme of themed shows in various combinations, ensuring that there will always be something fresh on the walls for gallery visitors.
The Wright Gallery represents another artistic attraction for visitors to The Quay in Westport, along with the Custom House and the Waterfront Gallery, and also adds another voice supporting Westport’s reputation as a focus for the arts in the West of Ireland.
The Wright Gallery opens its doors this Thursday, June 3. An official launch by Cllr. Tereasa McGuire of Westport Town Council will take place on Sunday, June 13, at 3pm. All welcome.

The Wright Gallery will be open Thursday to Monday inclusive, from 11am to 6pm daily.

‘RENEWAL’: NEW EXHIBITION AT THE WRIGHT GALLERY, WESTPORT

The Wright Gallery has just launched a new exhibition by the Wright Artist collective. RENEWAL is the title of a brand new show of paintings and prints by Breda Burns, Mags Duffy, Betty Gannon, Pam Gray, Claire Griffin, Ma...ry O’Grady, Gráinne O’Reilly, Susie Quinn, Sinéad Wall and Ian Wieczorek. This vibrant and exciting new exhibition is the second in an ongoing series planned by the locally based collective in the artist-run gallery at The Quay in Westport, located directly opposite the Custom House Studios.

The Wright Gallery opened its doors on 3rd June this year, and its official opening was attended by over 250 people. The gallery has continued to build on this success, with a steady influx of visitors both local and from further afield. “We are delighted with the way this is working out,” confirms artist Betty Gannon. “There has been great interest in our first exhibition, and now it’s time to have a total change of work. It’s important that the gallery stays fresh and that people who have visited can come back and see a completely new exhibition.” Fresh is certainly the word: RENEWAL is a show full of pleasures and surprises, bursting with colour. The show runs until 26th August, when the next show by the Wright Artists will be unveiled.

The Wright Gallery is establishing itself as a significant artistic attraction for visitors to the Quay in Westport, as well as an important artistic outlet for a group of energetic and talented locally-based artists. Come along and see for yourselves.
